The steam trains have long been a MOTAT favourite. Whether it is the rarity of steam trains or the sheer engineering power behind them, they have drawn crowds of all ages for almost four decades. Rail has always been the backbone of the New Zealand transport scene. It has been around since the early days of settlement, linking primary industries with markets. It was the first mass transit system and responsible for the opening up and development of New Zealand.
The steam trains operate on Live Days and pre advertised weekends. The collection includes locomotives, carriages, wagons, jiggers, the original Waitakere rail buildings and a magnificent photographic collection of over 5,000 images depicting the history of rail in New Zealand.
