Railways and Steam Trains

MOTAT's Rail Collection is available to see every 3rd Sunday of the month from 12pm - 4pm. You can also experience a ride on a vintage steam or diesel locomotive!

The steam trains have long been a MOTAT favourite. Whether it is the rarity of steam trains or the sheer engineering power behind them, they have drawn crowds of all ages for almost four decades.

Rail has always been the backbone of the New Zealand transport scene. It has been around since the early days of settlement, linking primary industries with markets. It was the first mass transit system and responsible for the opening up and development of New Zealand.

Rails importance to New Zealand is harnessed at MOTAT through restored trains which are either on site at the MOTAT Great North Road site for display or gearing up to take visitors for rides at MOTAT Motions Road site.

The steam trains operate on Live Days and pre advertised weekends. The collection includes  locomotives, carriages, wagons, jiggers, the original Waitakere rail buildings and a magnificent photographic collection of over 5,000 images depicting the history of rail in New Zealand.
