Explore New Zealand’s social history and the industrial technologies of our past at MOTAT’s September/October holiday experience, From the Old Country to Our Country.
With loads of hands-on activities kids can step back in time to a period of popular migration to New Zealand which greatly contributed to the multicultural society we are today. This heritage and culture focussed holiday experience will introduce youngsters to the stories of those who set forth on the long voyage to New Zealand in search of opportunity, and how this period helped shape the proudly diverse nation we have become
The Gum Fields
Imagine what life was life like on the Gum Fields of the 1800s with a fun and interactive gum digging activity. Use traditional tools to find and dig up Kauri gum in a specially constructed Kauri Swamp space.
Try your luck panning for gold at the Gold Rush creek activity area with an assortment of tools specially designed to replicate those used during the gold rush period.
The Family Tree
MOTAT invite you to Share your family’s heritage or migration journey on the post cards or luggage labels provided, and pin them to the Family Tree. Then watch the tree grow over the holiday period, illustrating the rich and diverse multicultural society we live in.
Mix and Match – Fashion from the Past
Chill out in this low energy activity area and discover examples of traditional dress from around the world. Style and dress up the large scale magnetic paper dolls or explore culture through traditional games.
