Explore and learn about 140 years of New Zealand’s rail sector across both MOTAT sites!

Rail is an important part of MOTAT’s collection and the museum has a wide range of rail vehicles and other rail objects of historical significance from large locomotives right down to a rail ticket or button.

The Rail Workshops and MOTAT’s demonstration railway are located over at MOTAT’s Meola Road site. For those who would like to experience the smells and sounds of steam trains, these operate on the Third Sunday of the month and on other special running days using our historic steam engine and rolling stock!

MOTAT Great North Rd is home to the former Waitakere Station dating from the 1880’s and sits alongside the Mt Albert Signal box which ensured the safe operations of trains until manual levers were superseded by a Centralised Rail Traffic Control system.

MOTAT holds a significant amount of rail archive material including more than 5,000 Rail photographs in the Walsh Memorial Library Collection and thousands of old railway plans and blueprints.
