Construction technology relies on both suitable materials and engineering principles. This combination had allowed for the development of a vast array of different buildings, from private homes to large public structures such as hospitals, schools, prisons and even bridges.
It is highly likely that constructing a building in which to shelter, was one the first priorities of early Maori on arrival to New Zealand. They built their homes and villages out of the materials available, particularly wood and plant material. With no nails, weaving held the walls and roof together. Many of the first European settlers also adopted these construction techniques before other options became available. However, by 1840 construction using a huge variety of methods and materials was in full swing throughout the country.
