1955: Condemned to the Junk Yard

No. 91 stayed in service until near the end of the tram era, when it was transported, along with many other redundant trams (minus their trucks and electrical equipment), to a ‘used car lot' at Kopu near Thames. Here they were on-sold for uses such as beach baches and farm sheds.

Tram 91 was then sold to a farm near Horahora in the Waikato where it did service as a utility shed. When the farm changed hands the former owner advised MOTAT that the tramcar was available for disposal. A team of volunteers inspected the tram in August 1999 and it was decided to return the car to Auckland and into the custody of MOTAT, initially to be used for spare parts on the restorations of M Class Trams 89 and 147.
