Bus No. 464 is the only survivor from a fleet of 50 Leyland Royal Tigers. It had a 30 year career on Auckland's roads from 1953 to 1983.
Ordered in the 1950s to replace trams that were being phased out, the Leyland "Royal Tigers" were the third type of diesel bus acquired by the Auckland Transport Board. Like many buses of the era, No. 464 arrived from England in "partly knocked down" (PKD) form
The bus built in 1953, was assembled by the Auckland Transport Authority from the PKD kit set. The Saunders-Roe Rivaloy body with 44 seats was made in Wales and sits on top of the Leyland Royal Tiger chassis.
In 1964 the Auckland Regional Authority (ARA) took over from the Auckland Transport Board. The transfer included a fleet of 368 buses of which No. 464 was one. The bus continued to operate for the ARA until being retired in 1983 and donated to MOTAT.
