This engine displays a change in body shape, which allowed for greater safety for the firefighters on board. It has an extremely large engine and can reach faster speeds than previous models.
It has a Dennis chassis, made in England and a ‘New World' body added in Whanganui. The body style is so-named because it first appeared in the United States. This style of body was an improvement on earlier versions because it enabled firefighters to sit facing inwards, instead of riding on the outside. An important consideration when the engine is travelling at speed.
This particular fire engine was the third to last Dennis fire engine imported into New Zealand. Initially supplied to the Whanganui Fire Board in 1937, it later went on to serve in Waverley in Taranaki from 1960 until 1976. Originally, the engine had no hose reel or water tanks, but they were fitted when it moved to the Waverley Brigade.
The NZ Fire Service donated this fire engine to MOTAT in 1976 after national restructuring.
