The tramways played a big part in the early years of Auckland's development and until the 1950s were a major contributor to the city's public transport network.
MOTAT's Western Springs Tramway is Auckland's Museum and heritage tramway which carries over 200,000 people a year between the two Museum sites in Western Springs. The collection of operating and displayed tramcars is representative of the North Island cities of Auckland, Wanganui and Wellington. Also complimented by examples from Dunedin, then also Melbourne and Sydney, Australia covering 120 years of steam, cable and electrical tram traction. It has several beautifully restored examples, including a double-decker tram.
The collection also includes a selection of trolleybuses and a variety of other items from tram tickets to uniforms.

Please Note:
The operation of our Double Decker tram is usually on the third Sunday of the month, and additional to the normal tram service. Due to the open top, its use is weather dependent and subject to volunteer tram crew availability.
Regretfully due to physical limitations, it is unable to accommodate pushchairs. Thank you for your understanding, and we look forward to you being a Double Decker passenger soon.
