Rail has always been the backbone of the New Zealand transport scene. It has been around since the early days of settlement, linking primary industries with markets. As the first mass transit system, it was responsible for opening up new land for settlement and supporting other development in New Zealand.
The rail collection at MOTAT has a very diverse range of locomotives, carriages, wagons, jiggers, and original railway buildings, along with a large collection of other items. Some of the locomotives and carriages have been restored and are in working order. The Walsh Memorial library also holds a magnificent photographic collection of over 5,000 images depicting the history of rail in New Zealand.
You can view objects from the rail collection every day at both of MOTAT's sites and can even visit the Rail Workshop at MOTAT's Meola Road site on the days that it is open.
On every 3rd Sunday of the month from 12pm - 4pm, you can also experience a ride on a vintage steam or diesel locomotive!
