Military


Historically military has played an important role in transport and technological developments, particularly in times of war. Objects from the Military section tell the stories of New Zealanders at war through the transportation, equipment and technology used in various military actions around the world. In particular, the section highlights New Zealand's major contribution to the allied effort during World War II in the field of transportation. New Zealanders, were responsible for constructing rail track, transporting supplies and personnel, and long range reconnaissance.

The collection includes a number of military vehicles, many of which are still in working condition. There is also field and communication equipment, uniforms and personal wartime memorabilia, along with a small collection of photographs.

The Military Collection is available to view every 3rd Sunday of the month from 12pm - 4pm. You can see many of the vehicles in action, along with re-enactments and a ride in a vintage military vehicle.
