Auckland Electric Tramway Band Photo

 

This photograph was donated to MOTAT by the Auckland Regional Authority Friendly Society some years ago and waited to be added to our database for a number of years. Friendly societies were very common in the days before comprehensive social security.

 

In the late nineteenth century and into the early twentieth, many large employers had bands which performed at company and civic functions. There were also many work-based sports clubs. This photo complements records and photographs we have of the Tramways’ Sick and Accident Friendly Society events and activities. We don't know the names of the men so we would be interested to hear from anyone with further information.
