The Newmarket ViaductThe Newmarket Viaduct, was recently described by the New Zealand Herald newspaper as 'one of the most distinctive engineering features' of New Zealand. It was built in 1966 for $2.26 million and is part of State Highway 1 North and South through Auckland.
Its height and length provided panoramic views over Auckland for the pedestrians who were allowed to walk over it a few days before it opened to vehicles. Whenever new stretches of motorway were opened around Auckland from the 1950s to the 1970s the public were invited to examine and walk over the area before it was opened to vehicles.
These photographs, and several others, were taken by a Mr William Cook and recently donated to MOTAT by a relative. The photos show Newmarket before the rapid rebuilding and development of the 1980s.
