Handley Page Hastings C.3

NZ5801

In 1952 four Hastings were acquired by the RNZAF as long range transport aircraft. The cockpit you see here is from one of these four aircraft. New Zealand was the only country other than Britain to operate Hastings aircraft.

The four Hastings aircraft began service with 41 Squadron and then in 1954 were transferred to the new 40 Squadron. There they performed transport duties to Britain, America and South East Asia on Air Force and Government duties. One of the four was written off after crashing in Darwin in 1955.

The Hastings aircraft turned out to be poor for carrying large loads and were withdrawn from service in 1965 and replaced with Hercules aircraft. The others were broken up but NZ5801 was donated to MOTAT. Unfortunately it was not possible for MOTAT to transport the whole aircraft, so it was dismantled and parts were removed and transported to MOTAT in 1971. MOTAT has the forward fuselage including the flight deck, forward undercarriage and engines.
