Segway HT i67
Artefact of the Month; July 2008.
The
Segway PT is a two-wheeled, self-balancing electric vehicle invented by
Dean Kamen. The Segway was unveiled in 2001 to the public and was
envisioned to be the next successful step in people transport.
Computers and motors in the base where you stand keep the Segway upright
when powered on with balancing enabled. When you are riding the Segway
it responds to subtle body directions, lean back for reverse, lean
forward to go. The Segway has electric motors powered by batteries that
can be charged from your house. It balances with the help of dual
computers running software, two tilt sensors, and five gyroscopes. In
older models like MOTAT’s Segway steering is controlled by a twist grip
on the left handlebar, which varies the speeds between the two motors (a
decrease in the speed of the left wheel will turn the Segway left). On
newer models the driver can simply lean in the direction they wish to
go! The Segway on display at MOTAT is one of the first two to be
imported into New Zealand and one of the first 1,500 made by Segway Inc,
New Hampshire.
