'Whirl Beeta' Food Mixer -  Artefact of the Month; December 2007

Even before the days of electricity, machines were invented which made preparing food easier. There were cake mixers and meat mincers and specialised machines like bean slicers and mayonnaise makers. Most of them were operated by turning a handle.

The food mixer you see here is a rare one. We believe it dates from the late 1940s. Although electricity was in use by then, it worked using water power. That was because War-time restrictions were in place and electricity was in short supply. In the top of a machine is a water turbine. The hose is attached to the kitchen tap. The water then passes out of the drainage hole at the bottom.

The ‘Whirl Beeta’ never caught on as it did not work very well! Many houses did not have the water pressure to make the blade turn quickly enough.
