MOTAT’s Da1400 first went into service in August 1955.  Built by the General Motors Corporation, Da1400 is one of 30 diesel locomotives obtained from America and Canada by the New Zealand Railways for the mainline service.

Used mainly  for main-trunk haulage, the running rights for this series of locomotives was between Auckland and Helensville, Auckland and Paekakariki, Frankton and Rotorua, and on the Tokoroa Branch.

Da1400 was powered by a GM two-cycle, V-type diesel engine    of the 567C series, rated at 1425 h.p., with a maximum speed    of  62 m.p.h.

Da1400 worked the mainline from 1951 to 1970, and then converted for use as a heavy shunting loco at the Te Rapa marshalling yard near Hamilton.

Retired from service in 1983, Da 1400 was transported by truck to MOTAT, travelling up Franklin Road and through Grey Lynn to arrive here at its final destination.
