Role of the Volunteer

Role of the Volunteer

Our volunteers assist the effective operation of the Museum so each person benefits from the other's knowledge and experience in contributing to the working of the Museum. Our volunteers get involved in many different areas of the Museum.

‘Volunteer work is most rewarding when you bring restoration work to a logical conclusion'
Les Adams, MOTAT Volunteer since 1982

In the past, our volunteers have worked predominantly in the areas of conservation and restoration of the artefacts. Whilst this continues to be an important role for the Museum, now and into the future there are a number of new roles developing which offer other volunteering opportunities

The telling of stories relating to our artefacts is a key area where the Museum is expanding and we can see our volunteers becoming involved in these hosting and story telling roles. This may be through hosting customers, or providing information to customers within different collection areas of the museum.

Given the diversity of our customers, we have volunteers coming to MOTAT for different experiences ranging from nostalgia to specific collection area enthusiasts. As such, the Museum needs to ensure that we have something for everyone. However, having volunteers on the ground interacting with the Museum's visitors, sharing their stories and igniting imaginations is a key objective of the Museum
