01 September 2010 - MOTAT's new holiday experience is just swell

Jump in your time machine and transport yourself back to Auckland in the 1950s with MOTAT's new ‘FLASHBACK Fifties' holiday experience.

From 25 September - 10 October, visitors to MOTAT can enjoy a range of exciting and interactive activities that are all about having fun while gaining knowledge of Auckland in the 1950s.

Bridgette Robinson, Events Coordinator at MOTAT, said that the activities are sure to keep the kids busy for hours.

"Every activity celebrates the 1950s, we even have games from that era that the kids can participate in, including hula hoops, knucklebones, yo-yos and pogo sticks," said Ms Robinson.

The holiday experience is bursting with activities; including the pedal car grand prix in honour of New Zealand's first Grand Prix at Ardmore in 1954. Kids of all ages can have a go in the pedal cars and try to beat the MOTAT record.

In 1959 Auckland's Harbour Bridge opened and was a significant milestone in New Zealand's history. Armed with craft materials, budding builders and architects can build their own replica Harbour Bridge or let their imaginations go wild and create their own bridge masterpiece.

Visitors will be guided through MOTAT's new I Am The Last Tram exhibition and asked a series of intriguing questions. Answer the questions correctly and go in the draw to win a MOTAT prize. The centerpiece of the exhibit is of course tram 89, which has been repainted and lovingly redecorated to look just like the last tram, tram 242, on the 26 December 1956 as it made its final trip along the streets of Auckland.

"MOTAT is the place to be these school holidays; we've got so much going on, so there is no chance of boredom that's for sure!" says Ms Robinson.

Kids will also receive their very own ‘FLASHBACK' board game; board games were a popular family pastime in the 1950s. Follow the map around MOTAT to collect the pieces that make up the game and enjoy playing it at home with the family.
