Blister Hangar - successfully moved

The project to relocate and restore the Blister Hangar has been completed.

This exciting project represents Stage 1 of the Aviation Display Hall Project.

NZ Strong was appointed to construct the new foundation and floor, then to shift the Hangar from is present location on the MOTAT Motions Road  site and relocate it on the new foundation and floor.

Preparation and construction commenced in September and progressed according to the schedule set by the Project team of NZ Strong, Studio Pacific Architecture, Value Solutions and MOTAT.

The Blister Hangar is the workshop for the volunteers of the Aviation section of MOTAT’s collection.

Over the many years of their focussed and dedicated effort they have restored and rebuilt aircraft that have been significant in the history of NZ aviation. Planes that have served New Zealand in war and peace have been preserved for future generations, and have become the basis for the overall new  Aviation Display Hall Project.

This collection is recognised worldwide:

“The World’s aviation industry is documented by a huge range of air museums around the world. In New Zealand, the Museum of Transport and Technology, near Auckland is unsurpassed”   - Destination Magazine 31 May 2006

These pictures show the various stages of the project; the planes outside and the construction of the new floor in preparation for the relocating of the hangar, the move and the hangar refurbished, ready for use.

MOTAT thanks the support of its Aviation volunteers, Clyde Graham Charitable Trust, South Auckland Charitable Trust, Sir John Logan Campbell Residuary Estate, Maurice Paykel Charitable Trust, Lottery – Environment and Heritage, MOTAT Society, Wingnut Films, ASB Community Trust and The Southern Trust to make this project a reality and in providing a historical resource for future generations.
